Small Business Matters: Goal Setting for Real Growth
Presented by: James Herbert, Certified FocalPoint Business & Executive Coach
Goals aren’t just items on a checklist, they’re the strategic bridge between your mission, your vision, and the daily actions that move your business forward. In this session, Coach James Herbert will walk you through how goals fit into the bigger picture of running a successful small business, from high-level purpose down to practical tactics.
You’ll learn why goals are the stepping stones toward your long-term vision, how each win builds momentum, and what separates a good goal from an ineffective one. James will break down proven frameworks, share examples you can apply immediately, and guide you through evaluating your own goals for clarity, impact, and alignment.
Whether you’re launching new initiatives or trying to stay focused in the day-to-day, this workshop will equip you with tools to set intentional goals—and actually achieve them.
About James Herbert: James Herbert comes from a family of entrepreneurs but initially fled the demanding lifestyle he witnessed in his father’s 70-90 hour work weeks. His career in corporate America was defined by challenging the status quo, a trait that ultimately led leadership to place him directly into entrepreneurial process improvement. He specializes in applying lean principles, leadership development, and organizational structure from the C-suite to the shop floor. James’s core mission is to help business owners achieve efficiency so they can get home at a reasonable hour and give their families the best of themselves, not just what’s left.
James Herbert’s professional journey is rooted in a profound personal understanding of the entrepreneurial sacrifice. Having watched his grandfather build a successful business and his father devote 70 to 90 hours a week to his work, James initially ran from that world into corporate America. There, his innate tendency to constantly question processes and challenge the status quo (“Why are we doing it like that?”) marked him as a natural problem-solver. This reputation culminated when leadership mandated his placement into an entrepreneurial improvement program, recognizing he had been advocating for such changes for years.
This move brought him full circle back to his entrepreneurial roots. James started with lean process improvement and customer service, which naturally expanded into leadership development and organizational restructuring. His experience is comprehensive, having worked from the C-suite to the shop floor in administrative, manufacturing, and overhaul environments. He firmly believes that while having a niche can be beneficial, cross-pollination of ideas between industries is far more powerful. James’s driving passion is fueled by the memory of scarcely seeing his overworked father; he is dedicated to helping business owners and executives build efficient operations so they can get home at a reasonable hour and give their families their best, not just their leftovers.
